American Sign Language (ASL) Interpretation
American Sign Language (ASL) is a natural language that serves as the predominant sign language for Deaf and hard of hearing communities in the United States. PGLS can provide professional, certified ASL interpreters for a wide variety of assignments, including legal depositions, arbitration, court hearings, client meetings, conferences and seminars, interviews, parent-teacher conferences, medical appointments, and more.
All of our professional ASL interpreters have many years of experience, are certified by the top accreditation organizations, such as the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), and National Interpreter Certification (NIC), and have additional specialized training in a variety of fields.
We can provide qualified ASL interpreters both on-site/in-person or through our Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) services, which are a simple, reliable and cost-effective solution to meet both spoken and sign language interpretation needs.
Communication Access Real-Time Translation (CART) Services
Communication Access Real-Time Translation (CART), also known as “real-time captioning,” is the system that converts speech to text, used by court reporters, closed captioners, voice writers, and others to provide language access to the Deaf and hard of hearing communities. The National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) describes CART services as “the instant translation of the spoken word into English text using a stenotype machine, notebook computer and real-time software.”
PGLS works with professional CART stenographers that utilize a court reporting stenography machine, a computer, and software to display everything that is being said, word for word. These specialized stenotype machines, unlike standard computer keyboards, include 24 keys. The stenographer holds down several keys at the same time to type phonetic shorthand that the computer software recognizes and translates to text.
Our specialized stenographers have extensive experience working specifically with captioning services for the Deaf and hard of hearing communities and are professionally certified or accredited by organizations such as the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA).
Our professional CART services are available both on-site and remotely.
Braille Translation
PGLS offers Braille translation services, converting written text into a tactile writing system often used by people who are visually impaired. All of our Braille translations meet or exceed the standards as set forth by the Braille Authority of North America (BANA) and Unified English Braille (UEB).
Once we receive your document, one of our professional transcriptionists converts the text into Braille Ready Format (.brf), followed by a thorough review by one of our editors, then printed on our high-speed Braille embosser, and packaged for delivery via US Mail or private courier.
We also provide a variety of paper options depending on the size of your document, as well as several binding methods, including GBC comb binding, spiral binding, and magazine fold (saddle stitch), depending on your needs.
Section 508 Compliance
We also provide Section 508 Compliance services for foreign language materials to be published online in accordance with government requirements for accessibility of Electronic and Information Technology (E&IT) information, in compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as well as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
At PGLS, we can work with your digital content, including websites, Microsoft Office documents, PDFs of traditional printed materials, apps, and more to ensure that the translated versions are accessible by assistive technologies, such as screen readers.
Our process includes all of the necessary document tagging, testing, and remediation necessary to ensure that your content meets government standards, utilizing a combination of the latest accessibility tools and human quality control.
